Beginner - Overlocker Sewing Class
Learn to sew in Shetland with classes at Uphouse Crafts.
Open to residents and visitors, these one-day classes are held at my workshop in Aith. Find us easily with the directions on our website. If you are 15 or under you should be accompanied by an adult.
This class is 5 hours and includes a 30-minute break. Cost ranges from £122.50 per person, with a 50% discount for booking for two people. Kits are included in the cost.
Sewing machines provided, or bring your own. Must be capable of straight, zig zag, and button hole stitches.
Overlocker Basics Class
Learn to sew on an overlocker at Uphouse Crafts. Create a snood and baby clothes to practice different techniques. Bring your own overlocker or try one at the class.
During the class you will learn how to do the following:
- How to thread and clean your overlocker
- The different parts of the overlocker
- Check your stitch for each fabric
- Idenitify the different types of stretchy fabrics
- How to lay out your fabric for cutting
- How to cut your patterns out

How to pin/clip your fabrics together
- Techniques to join your overlocking when sewing in the round
- How to attach neckbands, cuffs and waistbands
- How to finish your seams and ensure they wont unravel
When you are finished you will have three items to take home with you. A cotton jersey snood and a baby top and hareems. By making this three items you will gain confidence in sewing with stretchy fabrics and master some of the basic overlocker techniques for getting great results every time.

Are you in Shetland and want to learn to sew?
These classes are open to anyone living or visiting Shetland as each class is only one day.
Where do the classes take place?
The sewing classes by Uphouse Crafts take place in Shetland at my home workshop in Aith. Please see the visiting us section of this website for details on how to find us.
How long are the classes? What should I expect?
Each class is 4.5-hours of tuition for up to two learners with 30-minute break will be provided in the middle for you to enjoy a cup of tea. There will also be enough time to quickly visit the shop if you don't have a packed lunch
What is the cost?
The classes range from £80-90 per person, you can save money by booking for two people! Receive an automatic 50% discount on the second person when you and your friend learn to sew together. (discount is applied automatically at the checkout). All classes cover the cost of any necessary kits, except for the general sewing class.
Do I need my own sewing machine?
During the classes, you have the option of using one of Uphouse Crafts' sewing machines or bringing your own. Please ensure that your personal sewing machine is capable of performing a straight and zig zag stitch, and if possible, a button hole stitch.
What should I take with me?
If you want to use your own sewing machine, take that, plus needles for your machine. I have thread and any other items that you may need.
When learning to sew it can be easier to use bare feet to work the foot pedal so take socks or slippers if you want to try that.
Please take snacks, and/or a packed lunch with you. Tea and Coffee are provided.
Rescheduling or cancelling classes?
Call 07919 264148 or email andrea@uphousecrafts.com and you can reschedule to another day and time to suit you. Please give as much notice as possible.
If you wish to cancel your class please call or email at least 24 hours before your class to receive a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours of your class will be subject to a cancellation fee (25% of the class fee).
